Portraits of Canada

When I moved to Canada, I was struck by the diversity of cultures. I lived in Richmond and from the window I could see a Sikh scarecrow, complete with turban, as well as our Chinese neighbours, hard at work under their conical hats. This multicultural variety is the seed of this work. The project has given me the opportunity to discover how such diverse people turn out to be similar.

The 14 oil paintings depict actual Canadian women ranging from a young Inuit toddler to an enigmatic T’shimsian woman in her late nineties… Their skin and facial features show the beauty and uniqueness of each race. All this variety is united by flowers; each of the women have the flower emblem of a province or territory rather than hair.
