Every Building on 100 West Hastings
Re-Contextualization
Crossing this Vancouver block is always disconcerting, depressing, and embarrassing. How can this rich city have such poverty? Why the inequality?
Nowadays the decrepitude of the buildings and the large amount of destitute, impoverished, sick people ambulating day and night would make it impossible to reproduce the Douglas’ 2001 panoramic photograph of the infamous block. Is there an intention behind allowing this social and urban blight to happen?
My Every Building on 100 West Hastings 2014 adds a man laid down elegantly dressed with gloves and top hat -an inverse Manet- staring at the viewer, provoking the question Why?
